Light a Candle for Baby Loss Awareness Week

There are many people whose lives have been wounded by the loss of a baby, before or just after birth, with 1 in 5 families in the UK being affected by the tragedy of pregnancy and infant loss. Baby Loss Awareness Week takes place annually from 9th – 15th October with the end of the week being International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day.

People find it difficult to offer support to someone they know who has been affected by baby loss and are often too scared to bring up the subject. The week aims to lift this taboo and to show how you can help and stay close to those who have been affected. International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day encourages families and friends to simply light a candle and leaving it burning for at least an hour to support others and remember all the babies that were taken too soon.

In 2014, there were 3,254 stillbirths in England and Wales, which left thousands of expectant parents devastated. Baby Loss Awareness Week gives confidence and allows parents to open up when they may normally feel less inclined to, knowing that others are doing the same. Using the hashtag #babyloss, the campaign will allow parents struggling with the loss to read other people’s stories as well as encouraging them to talk about their own heartache.
